Have you ever wondered why the zebra has black and white stripes? White reflects the heat, while black absorbs heat. Hot air rises, and cold air drops, causing air circulation on the surface. And when wind blows over a surface, then it cools.
The building design of termite mounds secures a stable temperature and humidity. Inspired by this, designers like Bengt Warne and Anders Nyquist from Sweden motivated programmers to develop a mathematical model that offers predictable temperature inside buildings, whatever the temperature outside.
The natural ventilation refreshes the air every hour and secures the exit for bacteria, dust particles and even dust mites without any additional energy. It reduces investments and operation expenses.
While this works for small and tall, the opportunities are even more attractive for office blocks of 8 stories. Since there is no need to put air ducs in between floors, the same volume of a building can now house more floor, while saving energy and improving health.
